A joyful start to the year

It would not be an exaggeration to describe the start of the 2019 school year at CBC Fremantle as close to perfect. We have been blessed with a wonderful intake of new staff, across all levels and subject areas, and their enthusiasm has been infectious.

The start of a school year is pivotal to how the rest of the year unfolds. At CBC, the staff began with a new staff induction, some professional development and a family barbeque. It was an amazing sight to see so many young families, children born into the CBC family enjoying the bouncy castle; parents, friends and neighbours of staff all joining together to share each other's company on a balmy summer's night.

The student leaders began before any of their peers with a Mass attended by the staff. Symbolically standing alongside each other, the staff and the students celebrated the Mass and sat down to lunch as equals. The Year 12 gentlemen also participated in their spiritual retreat, which prepared them for the year ahead with God's blessing.

Our wonderful new crop of Year 7 students began on day two and followed the time old tradition of marching into the Gymnasium through a guard of honour formed by their Year 12 buddies and a standing ovation from the parents and staff. The sight of tomorrow's gentlemen being chaperoned around the College by Year 12 students has become an iconic image in this school and reflects the pastoral welcome each new cohort is offered.

Years 8 through 11 then joined us on day three at another College assembly, following which we celebrated the beginning of a new year with an extended Mentor Group, before the 2019 academic year was well underway by 11am.

edit_dsc05335.jpgOver the last two weeks our Parent Information Evenings have been held to sell-out audiences with a few laughs and some more sombre messages about the importance of vigilant parenting and some of the potential pitfalls young people face in today's society.

Today, we welcome back our recently graduated Year 13s to a breakfast served by their Year 12 brothers and a 95 Academic Club assembly celebrating the latest inductees into that prestigious club.

Each of these ceremonies are not just events, they are carefully crafted occasions that form part of the tapestry of a CBC student's journey. An African sage, Sobonfu Somé, wrote

" Community is the spirit, the guiding light of the tribe, whereby people come together in order to fulfill a specific purpose, to help others fulfill their purpose, and to take care of one another. The goal of the community is to make sure that each member of the community is heard and is properly giving the gifts she or he has brought to this world. Without this giving, the community dies. And without the community, the individual is left without a place where he can contribute. The community is that grounding place where people come and share their gifts and receive from others."

After each occasion at CBC Fremantle, I sense all the participants feel that spirit, are nourished by that spirit and are eager to contribute to that spirit. It is an uplifting emotion.

edit_img_3829.jpgThe greatest representation of our community will be held on Monday. Our Opening Mass reflects our solidarity, our oneness, our pride and our commitment. It reflects our Faith and our goodness; our modeling and our search to be more Christ-like in our actions and thoughts. I look forward to seeing you at this special celebration and commit the entire resources of the College, human and physical to the support, formation and success of your sons in 2019.

God Bless you all!
